Roohi Jeelani, a fellow infertility warrior and a fertility doctor. On a mission to educate and empower all that love this field or have been touched by it.
How did you and your husband meet and when did you know you may need help to conceive?
We met in college and always knew from the minute we met that we are meant to be! I always knew I would need help since I was diagnosed with PCOS as a teen, however the extent of treatment was truly a shock.
You’re in the unique position of undergoing treatment now (and in the past?) while helping patients conceive and navigate IVF at Vios Fertility. How has this changed or influenced how you approach patients?
Being a patient while in training really changed how I practice medicine. While going through it myself I realized how little we truly know about fertility and how frustrating hearing that as a patient was.
Why is it important that more South East Asians be represented in storytelling here?
Cultural stigma- we are bred to think that it will happen and when it doesn’t it’s the women’s fault so we hide it. I think it is important to know that fertility and/or infertility is not anyone’s fault. You DO NOT need to be ashamed. Seeking help is ok. Letting a doctor into what is thought to be a “private” part of your life is ok!
What are some of the biggest misconceptions about infertility?
That it only impacts older patients, long as you are under 35 you are ok…FALSE
What words come to mind when I say “What does infertility look like?”
Rollercoaster, ups and downs, twists and turns
A wild ride that likely never goes as planned (oxymoron since I’m pretty sure no one wants to see a fertility doctor), but in the end it works out…
